Spirulina is a blue-green algae plant that was discovered in South America and Africa. It grows in locations with tropical weather, lots of sunlight, pure H2O, and a clean/non-pollution environment. It contains a very high, vegetable protein (approximately 60%-63% of the plant is protein) and is considered to be a complete protein source, meaning it contains all 9 of the essential amino acids in correct proportion. beef vs spirulina Spirulina is one of the world’s easiest and best digestible protein source (much better than beef). If you were to eat 10 grams of spirulina and 10 grams of beef, you would be able to digest up to four times more nutrients from spirulina than from beef. That’s insane!

It also contains a ton of vitamins (its vitamin B12 content is about 3.5 times higher than animal liver). Vitamin B12 is one of those vitamins many vegetarians and vegans miss out on because it’s not found in many other plant sources. But it’s an essential nutrient that needs to be consumed for the benefit of treating anemia. Spirulina also contains a lot of other vital minerals such as iron, phosphorus, magnesium sodium, potassium, and calcium. Want to protect your cells? Spirulina contains about 5 times more beta-carotene than carrots and 40 times more than spinach! It can also help lower cholesterol and help prevent heart disease.

In just 1 Teaspoon of Spirulina you get 2 grams of protein. Not bad for a plant that grows under water! **Update: I tasted spirulina for myself last night and to be honest, there’s hardly a taste! It doesn’t taste like seaweed. It has a fairly “clean” smell too. It’s really easy to add in your green juices and smoothies.

Check out this delicious green smoothie that uses spirulina. If you haven’t done much juicing, try adding a red delicious or fuji apple to sweeten it up (seeds included):

You can add spirulina to any juice or smoothie to give your drink added benefits. Most spirulina packages are small but that’s because the flavor is a little potent and you don’t need to use a ton of it to get the benefits.
